The Outsider

A girl fills most of the canvas, while the forest behind her shrinks to a narrow strip. This imbalance reflects the estrangement I felt after moving to Singapore, where language, habits and relationships all had to be rebuilt. Beneath her feet is a toy-block house; fairy-tale red houses line the forest. All symbolise home, yet none belongs to her. The Ragdoll cat on her back once kept me company but has since passed away. The work holds two homes: a belonging still being sought, and one that survives only in memory.
